A couple of nights ago, we had our patio door open. It leads to our screened in, outdoor patio and the night air was so mild, we couldn’t resist the fresh air.  The tree frogs were singing their ballads, and I reveled in the pleasant sound that would grow to a cacophony once summer reaches its climax with hot, humid nights.  It was a trailer of what would soon entertain us over the next few months. I smiled as I envisioned my husband and I sitting in the comfort of the patio in our new home. We would soon enjoy the night breeze, the frog songs, an occasional cricket, and the rhythmic sound of cicadas behind the shelter of our screened in room. Soon, this enclosure would get much use in the early morning as we sip coffee, enjoying the orange and pink sky of emerging daylight, followed by late evening conversations as the stars and moon shine in the night sky.

The next morning, I opened the patio door to assess the weather for the day. I could still hear a faint chirp of a tree frog that was either continuing his night watch for his tribe, still in search of a mate, or persisting in its barking to ward off others from his newly claimed territory.  Along with the tree frog, I heard a mourning dove cooing. I enjoy listening to the call of a dove, especially when it is answered by another coo from a nearby tree. I like to imagine they are mates, or soon to be, calling out to one another for guidance on a meeting place. After the solitary call of the dove, I heard a rooster crowing out its announcement that night had ended, and the sun would soon arise over the horizon.  It was a great way to start my morning before getting ready for work.

The songs of nature are pleasing to my ears and nothing short of a symphony. In a symphony, there are many different elements that make up the composition. It is a complex compilation of beautiful sounds from various instruments. Isn’t that what we are presented with when we take the time to listen to the harmonious sounds of nature?
