Don’t let static distract you.

While commuting to work, I listen to a variety of stations or music from my iTunes library.  In the mornings, I like to listen to uplifting music or stories from some of my favorite Christian stations. One morning I was listening to Pathway to Victory, which usually doesn’t tune in until I am about 8 miles from my house.  This particular morning, however, I was able to tune in just a few miles from my home.  As I was about 10 minutes into the program, static began to break through. Soon, there were two stations competing for the same airwave and my program would be interrupted with a hiss, or a laugh, or a snippet from a news station, making it very hard to concentrate on the message.  The static eventually disappeared, and my station resumed without further interruption, but I had missed a few key points, and it took me a minute to piece it together.

I likened this to how it goes for me in my everyday walk with God. Sometimes I am tuned in perfectly to His leading when out of nowhere my mind is filled with my grocery list, my work schedule, the Cubs score, my worries that shouldn’t be worries, and a plethora of random thoughts that fly into my head. Sometimes my thoughts are memories from years ago. Other times they are thoughts of fear, worry, or guilt that try to break into my worship time. Any amens on that one?  It can be hard to tune in to Him. Make no mistake, it is by design of the one that tries to distract us from reading the Word, listening to a sermon, or just silently praising. That hiss of static, that guilty feeling, that fearful or anxious thought, that voice that wants you to doubt your worth, or that prompting to do something you know you shouldn’t; it is meant to keep us from the voice of Truth. Don’t let it. Keep tuning that dial, keep driving (or walking or running or reading) and eventually the static will disappear, and you will get back on track.  Be well, be blessed, be strong.
