From the song “Mad World” by Tears for Fears.
In the 1982 Tears for Fears song “Mad World”, we find a very catchy, dark melody that sings and screams of loneliness and despair. The singer states, in a melancholy sound “And I find it kind of funny, I find it kind of sad, the dreams in which I’m dying are the best I’ve ever had, I find it hard to tell you ’cause I find it hard to take, when people run in circles, it’s a very, very, mad world”. Now, I will tell you that I really like this band. I have a few songs in my playlist by them and this is one I have always liked, but not necessarily because I related to the dreary mindset. I can understand, however, that there are children, and adults who fight the oppressive feelings of depression. It isn’t something to “snap out of” or “just get over”. It is a dark cloud that pushes one down so hard, it can feel hard to breathe.
The writer of this song is Roland Orzabal and it is sung by Curt Smith, who was the bass player in the band. I think they brilliantly catch the overall tone of depression and loneliness of children that are either isolated or abused. You will have to listen to the song if you’ve never heard it. It sings of children feeling invisible and wanting to feel important. Isn’t that what we all want? Don’t we all want to feel like a viable part of society in which we matter? Hey Tears for Fears band; thanks for bringing an important subject to light in this classic, depressing, 80’s British-era song.
If you are feeling lonely or depressed, make sure you reach out to someone, don’t let it go another day; you are not alone. Don’t let your oppressive dreams be the best ones. Shoot for a new dream in which you are visible, you are heard, and you matter, because you do!
