Taken from Pink Floyd “Wish you were here”
We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fishbowl year after year. Many people have written about the meaning of this song and these lyrics, so this will be brief. I tried not to read anyone else’s interpretation because I didn’t want to sound plagiaristic. A lost soul is one that hasn’t found their purpose or continually wonders what life is about, why we were created, or if there is a God at all. A lost soul just wanders around aimlessly through life, day after day, week after week, year after year.
Who are the two people in the song? I don’t know; it might be fun to sit down with Roger Waters and ask. The two lost souls might be one of his band members, a friend, or a lover. What does the fishbowl represent? Perhaps life in general, maybe the media and always being in the limelight. It could be a married couple that have lost their way and can’t find the love that once brought them together. They go through the routine of daily life; work, kids, dinner, dishes, laundry, bills, groceries; repeat day after day and so on. Whatever the meaning, the song is incredible and that is just one of the catchy phrases enveloped in the power-packed melody. I think that is one of those songs where I could name that tune in just one note. That is a reference for the older folks, like me, that remember the game show “Name that tune”. I bet you want to go put on some Pink Floyd now, don’t you? I sure do.
