Standin’ on a hill in the mountain of dreams, tellin’ myself it’s not as hard, hard, hard as it seems. Wow! The entire song “Going to California” by Led Zeppelin has got to be one of my favorites; but then I say that about a lot of Led Zeppelin songs. The paragraph preceding this lyric refers to a man that is trying to find a queen without a king. Then, in the same paragraph, there is the lyric “Tryin’ to find a woman who’s never, never, never been born. When Robert Plant sings this song, I have to turn it up and pay attention.
I stated in one of my prior posts that songs from this era were poetic and mysterious. There were so many great song writers of that time. Once again, I will give my own version of what this song is about and not read other posts so as not to copy what others think. This sounds like a young man who has been hurt by a previous lover and is in pursuit of a fresh start. That is why is “going to California” looking for a woman with flowers in her hair. He is standing on a hill in the mountain of dreams, with all these initiatives he wants to take for his life; all these dreams he wants to pursue and while pursuing them, he just wants companionship. He wants a woman to share his dreams, his hopes, his life, and one who wants the same with him.
Isn’t that what many of us want? When we are lucky enough to find our partner to share our dreams, life feels good. When we have our dreams crushed by someone, it feels pretty rotten; rotten enough that you want to run away and get a fresh start. I dare you to go stand on that hill in a mountain of dreams and don’t give up. You don’t have to go to California, you can start right where you are.
