How to keep fit over 40; why its important for Women.

Being confident and fit over 40 is an amazing feeling.

I am very confident in my fifties. Sure, my flexibility isn’t what it was in my twenties or thirties, I don’t have the stamina and strength when I first started working out, but I am proud to be able to do the activities I enjoy, while feeling great and energized. When I was in my mid 20’s, I started working out. I lifted weights and began running; I loved it and felt like I would be able to do it forever.  I was so energized after a run and truly got that “runners high”. Whether it was 95 degrees or -5, I would keep faithful to my schedule. In my 40’s, my routine was less and less “routine”. My back and my hips started to ache after running more than a mile. Now, in my 50’s, I don’t run at all, unless it is a brief spurt on the treadmill.  When I moved out to Oregon, my job was pretty time consuming and my exercise routine took a back seat. I was able to go on several cool hikes and walks (more of that in another post). Now that I am out of the executive role, I am trying to get back into working out and staying healthy.

I have a sister that is very inspiring to me; she is 6 years my senior and makes herself get out and run a few times a week. On her off days, from running, she gets her bands out and works out. Ironically, I remember her telling me many years ago that I inspired her to get out and run.  Now, I am the one who looks for inspiration. I am no longer a runner, but I do enjoy walking. I am no longer as dedicated to weight lifting, as I once was, but I still lift and stretch on occasion. My sisters dedication has gotten me back into a routine.

Keeping fit is so important; exercise is key to good circulation, a healthy outlook, and good mobility. There is a vast amount of research around women’s health and exercise.  According to Go Red For Women, Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women, causing 1 in 3 deaths each year.

Even mild exercise can make an impact on this statistic. Exercise looks very different for everyone, depending on where you start.  The worst thing you can do is compare yourself to other women. Don’t do it. Everyone has a starting point and not everyone looks the same. We are all unique and our goal should be better health, not the perfect body. If you haven’t worked out in a long time, or ever; start slow. Your workout may simply be walking to the end of the street. As you progress, add a little more challenge to your workout. You can take soup cans and use them for bicep curls. You can use your wall as a support for a simple stretch or squat. The biggest hurdle is above your neck; never let your brain defeat you.

I have several friends who are into fitness, one of them has a fitness business and can offer advice and help through your journey. You can check out her economical, reliable, down to earth options for fitness on her website.  I know stretches are a big component to what she teaches. With her programs, you won’t feel intimidated, just motivated. Stretching is so important  for posture, mobility, and muscle strength.
