Is it hot in here?

Overcoming menopause symptoms such as sweating and hot flashes is so satisfying.

Are you of that age when your body betrays you and starts sweating profusely at the most inopportune times? I remember times holding meetings or being in the middle of a board meeting and feeling that familiar heat start at my toes and travel all the way to the top of my head. There I was red-faced and starting to glisten until I was having my own, private sweat fest. I know some of you can relate. What do you do at that moment? Do you say “Oh, excuse me while I sweat, I’m in menopause.” Do you wipe your face, and if so, does every woman happen to have a napkin nearby or do you use your hand and wipe it on your suit. Ugh, the embarrassment of the more mature woman.
Let’s not forget about all the other symptoms; Anxiety, irritability, anger, fog brain, and demotivation, just to mention a few. How does one navigate all of this? An easy answer is hormones!!!! Oh, the joy of estrogen. I realize that isn’t an option for everyone and in reality, it probably isn’t good to take long term. Sooner or later, we have to throw the towel in and give in to our new lot in life.
Do you have some tip and tricks that work for you? I have found that caffeine exacerbates sweating and irritability. I haven’t given it up, I just recognize it as the culprit. Alcohol, especially wine, can cause some serious night sweats. Again, I’m just recognizing the culprit here.

Seriously though, exercise helps immensely and it doesn’t have to be an all-out 2 hour gym session. Walks and light weights are miracle cures. There are certain supplements that help, but, I am not a physician so don’t take my word as a reason to go out and change your medicine cabinet; you should consult with your provider first. I take Milk Thistle, Biotin, a multi-vitamin, and have dabbled with Black Cohosh. I also like DHEA but I know there is controversy around it. There are many more remedies out there to try, and I would love to hear more from you. Mostly, just hang in there; it does get better and it can lead to some funny stories.
How about you? What works for you? Younger ladies: what questions do you have for your more mature audience?
